Art is as old as man and we have seen it evolve into a different form. It is expressed in so many ways like through paintings, music, and other creative works. Before the beginning of this century, Art was predominantly known to be a physical item.

The introduction of Technology and the internet made it possible for us also to have digital forms of art. Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) is a digital file that can be transferred across a blockchain network and it is considered the future of Art.

Phygital art is a term used to describe the intersection between physical and digital art. Physical art cannot be replaced and it still holds its value today. NFTs are one way that can bring both physical and digital arts together.

Traditional artists are trying to break into the digital market by combining the physical and digital arts in an attempt to reach out to people who do not understand the essence of artworks they cannot hang on the wall. A good example is an Indian artist Amira Seth selling physical slices of her Augmented reality known as “Voice sculpture” at her gallery Morrow Collective in Dubai.

NFTs are unique and irreplaceable and most importantly they show proof of ownership that can be viewed publicly on the blockchain. One problem that has faced the art industry, in general, is authenticity. Anyone can replicate the Monalisa Painting but how can we determine the true owner of the art. NFTs can be used to prove authenticity by storing all the relevant information about an art’s provenance on the blockchain.

Typically, Art Collectors buy artworks from galleries and can decide to resell the art at a higher price without giving royalties to the original artist. By binding each artwork to an NFT, the artist can receive royalties each time their artwork is sold because every transfer of the linked NFT is recorded on the blockchain for everyone to view.

Phygital is an opportunity for us to use both real and digital arts for new artistic innovation. Traditional artists and also a new generation of digital artists can take their work to a whole new level by bringing art collectors, fans, and art lovers closer proximity to their work.
